Fields of education and research

Fields of education and research at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

Energy

Energy is a wide research field at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Podgorica which covers, among others, thermo-energy, hydro-energy, thermo-technique, energy efficiency of buildings and the use of renewable energy sources. The subjects of education and research in the field of energy at the Faculty are: different phenomena of heat transmission and fluid dynamics, their experimental analyses or software based numeric analyses; production of electric and thermal energy from different sources (renewable and non-renewable): hydro power plants, wind farms, thermal energy plants, heath pumps, facilities for simultaneous production of electrical and heat energy (co-generation) etc.; systems of heating, cooling, ventilation and air conditioning HVAC; analyses of the work of different types of electrical motors (pumps, ventilators, compressors etc.); analyses and organization of electrical and thermal measurement; analyses of energy needs, i.e. energy consumption in different activities; analyses of energy saving interventions in industrial facilities, process industry, construction and other economic activities; energy audits and energy certifications of buildings.

Applied mechanics and Mechanical Design

Within the field of Applied mechanics and Mechanical Design at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Podgorica the static and dynamic analyses and syntheses of mechanical structures are carried out, analyses of strain and constructive design of components, methodical structural design, elaborations and application of computer calculation methods. The use of CAD/CAE software enables structural analysis and optimization of machine structures. Students of this module are also familiarized with basic numeric methods, methods of experimental strain analysis, analysing dynamic characteristics of machines and equipment and, separately, motors and vehicles. Engineers who complete studies at the module Applied mechanics and Mechanical Design can be employed in SME-s which work on the design and/or production of machines or machine elements from the field of general Mechanical engineering, structural metal constructions, elements of vehicles and other transport instruments, as well as in the enterprises which exploit such vehicles and/or use them in transport.

Mechatronics

Within the field of Mechatronics at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Podgorica, the modelling process of different types of electrical, mechanical, fluid, thermal or combined systems is carried out. They find application in robotic manipulators for different purposes, CNC machines, cars, drones, automatically driven vehicles, industrial facilities, medical instruments etc. Selection and implementation of different types of actuators, usually used in mechatronic systems, is done for the mentioned systems, the choice of sensors to be integrated, the choice and implementation of best suited peripherals and microcontroller units etc. For a mechatronic system to be complete, it is necessary to create a program, i.e. to teach the system to carry out a defined task. For that purpose, recording of signals from chosen sensors, actuators and propulsion systems is done, followed by integrating of the components with the controlling unit of the mechatronic system and their implementation via the microcontroller until the final functionality of the system. After the signal recording the signal analysis is done, the functionality checks, removal of eventual mistakes and launching of the system.

Production engineering

Within the module of Production engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Montenegro studies and research from the field of production technologies, CAD/CAM systems and industrial engineering are carried out. Information on technology engineering and product design are collected through the analysis of production technologies, which are then used as a basis for research projects. The use of CAD/CAM systems enables application of computers in the field of geometric modelling and technology of product design. Also, this practical knowledge is used in the field of computer control of contemporary CNC machines and integration of all the production elements, hardware and software, in the CIM systems. The field of production engineering deals with quality management systems, production and business systems as well as intelligent technology systems.

Industrial engineering and quality

Industrial engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Podgorica is the field which relates to the application of methods and techniques for the improvement of business processes and their efficiency, application of methods for effective and optimal connection of units, staff, material used, instruments and costs in a process. Special attention is dedicated to the control of process performance, application of methods of decision making based on multiple criteria, application of neural networks, LEAN technology, development of expert systems, planning methods, control and optimisation of industrial business processes, with the use of different software tools.

Quality is the Industrial Engineering field which has been developed for a series of years at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Podgorica, reaching a distinctive position as a study and research discipline. Namely, quality is studied here wider than the quality of products, encompassing also the quality of processes and the quality of systems. Quality standards are studied, in particular the management system standards, which enables the improvement of business processes from the aspect of world’s best practice, the field of standardization, certification, metrology, and accreditation, business excellence and total quality management, as well as the field of quality control. Special attention is dedicated to the study of quality methods and techniques with the application of software programmes.

Road traffic

With the rapid development of road traffic in the past several decades the scope of connected problems has increased together with their specificities in the fields such as organization of public transportation, traffic accidents, parking in urban zones, congestion in the road networks, violation of traffic rules etc. All of these problems can be solved very successfully with the application of appropriate knowledge, which makes the essence of education and research at this programme of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Podgorica. After their education at the programme Road Traffic, students are enabled to work in the following activities: 1. Planning, regulating and control of the road traffic; 2. Safety of the road traffic; 3. Technology and organization of the road transport; 4. Shipping, logistics and intermodal transport.
